Community Has No Expiration Date: Why Alumni Should Join the Fight Against Sexual Violence at Willia

Student movements have always been critical parts of struggles for justice.

Now that the fight to end sexual assault on college campuses has gained national momentum each of us who are committed to this place must step forward and make our voices heard. When alumni step up and speak out against sexual aggression on college campuses, a powerful message is sent to decision-makers in the College community. It says that those who are committed to this fight will not stop when we graduate. Community has no expiration date. While alumni are no longer physically present at the College, they play a vital role in supporting the advocacy on campus that is working to ensure this community reaches its highest potential. Withholding financial support, sharing of best practices with advocates, and contacting administrators when you are dissatisfied with the handling of a case are all ways that College alumni can take part in the fight to end sexual violence.

The power of students rising up and demanding change has led to the success of even the most improbable causes. Alumni, join current students in the fight to end sexual violence on campus. It cannot be won without you. Use your professional and educational resources to help advocates and hold administrators accountable. In 2014, William and Mary received 104.2 million dollars in gifts and commitments with more than 15,000 undergraduate alumni donating, according to the 2014 Overview of William and Mary’s Financials. Leverage your financial and social power to demand change and make William and Mary a safer community.
